Buying leads versus cold calling

Cold calling is not free. It is paid for in hours, and the arithmetic only works if you have hours to spend.

What cold calling actually costs

The dialler and the data are the small part. The real cost is the hours, plus what those hours do to you: most of a cold-calling day is spent being hung up on, and that has a way of ending call sessions early.

It also takes time to get good at, which is a genuine argument in its favour if you are new — there is no faster education in what sellers sound like.

What buying leads costs

Money, obviously, and a loss of control over volume: you cannot decide to have forty conversations next Tuesday.

What you get back is the elimination of the top of the funnel — the part with the worst ratio and the worst hours.

The break-even, done honestly

Take the hours you spend prospecting each week, price them at what an hour of your time is worth on the work only you can do, and compare that with a week of lead spend. Most people have never done this calculation and are surprised by it in one direction or the other.

If you do not yet know what a good seller conversation sounds like, spend some time cold calling regardless. That skill is what makes a bought lead worth anything.

Questions people ask

Is cold calling still effective?

Yes, for people who do it consistently. Consistency is the hard part, and it is why so many people who describe cold calling as dead have in fact stopped after three weeks.

Do I still need to call if I buy leads?

Absolutely. A lead is a conversation that has begun, not one that is finished. Nothing sells itself.

Can I stop prospecting entirely once I am buying leads?

You can, but it makes you dependent on one channel. Most durable operations keep some of their own top-of-funnel running even when they do not strictly need it.
